講演タイトル | "Unravelling the mechanisms of hybridization in tetranychid mites" <要旨> The evolution of reproductive barriers has long captivated evolutionary biologists and is a major focus in speciation research. In our group, we study the role and the underpinning mechanisms of reproductive barriers in haplodiploid arthropods. We currently focus on how mating behaviour drives hybridization in contact zones. A second research goal is to dissect hybrid dysfunction, a strong isolating barrier that arises both within and between species. For our work, we sampled field populations across Europe of four Tetranychus mite species and established a panel of over 50 genotypes in the laboratory. Using this panel, we are integrating approaches from molecular, population, and theoretical biology. The talk will outline our current understanding of the mating behaviour of this hybridizing clade of mites, which is typified by complex patterns of assortative and non-assortative mating. By tracking three hybrid defect phenotypes across the mite panel, I will describe whether, and how, intraspecific and interspecific hybrid dysfunction co-vary. As these Tetranychus species carry divergent Wolbachia symbionts that induce cytoplasmic incompatibility, I will outline how polymorphic infection adds an additional axis of variation in post-mating isolation. Together, these and findings of our colleagues help to obtain a deeper understanding of early speciation, an enigmatic phase that continues to fascinate evolutionary biologists. |
