講演タイトル | "Animal Welfare and the assessment thereof by the use of Animal Welfare Indicators" <詳細> Due to ethical values and perspectives as well as consumer demands, animal welfare plays an increasingly important social and political role. The concept of the “five freedoms” formed the basis for an evaluation of animal welfare in livestock husbandry (FAWC, 1979). These five freedoms constitute that the animals should have (1) the freedom from hunger or thirst ( by giving access to fresh water and a suitable diet), (2) the freedom from discomfort (by provision of an appropriate environment, including shelter and a comfortable resting area, (3) the freedom from pain, injury or disease (by provision of prevention, diagnosis and treatment), (4) the freedom to express normal behavior (by provision of sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind, (5) the freedom from fear and distress (by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering). Fraser (2008) stated, that in order to evaluate animal welfare, three concepts have to be emphasized. The basic health and functioning, the possibility of carrying out natural behavior and the affective state of animals need to be considered in the evaluation of animal welfare. If one of these criterions is not fulfilled, it may lead to poor welfare as the criteria overlap substantially. Animal welfare indicators are used to assess the fulfillment of the criterions for animal welfare and are classified into resource-, management- and animal based indicators. Resource based indicators are indicators which represent a sufficient provision of resources such as e.g., space, facilities and shelter. Management based indicators define an adequate management such as handling and treatment methods. Animal based indicators are measured directly on the animals and include for example foot pad dermatitis in poultry, lameness in dairy cows or diagnostic findings in lungs of pigs at slaughter. In the presentation, we will discuss the concepts and definitions of animal welfare and the ways how to measure it. How is good animal welfare in livestock identifiable and which problems may arise with different measurement methods? We will try to find an answer to these questions. |
